Almandy Shifter Prison looked just as foreboding as I’d expected. It wasn’t just the barbed wire on the fence—that was more for show than anything- it was also the magic I could feel even from my seat in my car, and the half-vamps standing watch at evenly spaced intervals around the perimeter.

I pulled up to the gate.

“State your business,” a guard, dressed in an army fatigue uniform, barked from his place in the guard house.

“We are here to visit Mathias Pillar. We prearranged this appointment.” I tried to stay calm. It wouldn’t help anything if I came across as nervous, even though I sure as hell was.

“Name?” The guard’s expression never changed.

“Lionel Daniels.”

“And her?” He pointed a finger at Glow.

“Gloria Mayer,” she answered before I could.

“IDs.” There was no please. No formalities. Nothing. He was all seriousness.

Glow pulled her license out of her wallet and handed it to me. I put it with mine and handed them over.

The guard scanned them with something before handing them back. “Visiting time is only until four o’clock.”

I glanced at my watch. It wasn’t even eleven. “We’ll be out of here way before that.” I planned to keep this meeting very, very short.

“I repeat. Visiting time is only until four o’clock.” The guard’s expression never wavered.

“Got it.” I handed Glow her license. “Are we clear to drive in?”

“Yes. But you will have to go through multiple levels of security. The magic is strong on the both of you.”

I glanced at Glow to make sure she’d heard him.

“We understand.” I made eye contact with the guard.

He nodded and opened the gate.

I slowly drove through.

Glow grabbed my hand. I wasn’t sure if she was taking it for me or for her, but either way, I enjoyed the feel of her hand in mine.

The drive leading to the parking lot was lined with barbed wire as well; the fences went so high it was almost dizzying to look on either side of the narrow road.

“So, they are really up on security here.” Glow looked out her window. “It’s pretty crazy.”

“Which is probably a good thing. You know, considering who’s in here.” It wasn’t publicly reported who was held inside the walls of this prison, but that didn’t mean people didn’t know.

“Yeah.” Glow visibly shook. “You’re right.”

“You really don’t have to do this. There’s still time for you to change your mind.” Even as I said it, I knew she had to go in with me. I’d be worried sick about her if I left her in the car.

“Yes, I do.”

I pulled into a parking spot. “Fine, but we stay together the whole time.”

“Yes. I just really hope I don’t have to go to the bathroom while we’re in there.” She didn’t crack a smile, so I assumed she was really worried about it.

“If you do, I’ll wait right outside.” I didn’t want to come across as totally overprotective, but we were going into a maximum security paranormal prison. This place was no joke.
